Can Apple Health track food?

The short answer

No — not on its own. The Health app stores nutrition, but it has no screen for entering food. There is no search box, no barcode scanner and no meal list anywhere in it. What it has is a set of nutrition fields that any app is allowed to write into, and charts that display whatever lands there.

So the honest answer to “can Apple Health track food” is: Health can hold your food data and show it to you, but something else has to put it there. That something is a third-party app.

What Apple Health can hold

HealthKit — the framework behind the Health app — defines nutrition types for energy, carbohydrates, protein, fat, sugar, salt, fibre, caffeine, water and alcoholic drinks, among others. Once a value is written, Health charts it, keeps it in your own store, and can pass it to any other app you allow.

This is why the question gets such contradictory answers online. The data model is there and always has been. The logging is not. Apple built the filing cabinet and left the paperwork to everyone else.

What slotho writes to Apple Health

slotho is one of the apps that fills that cabinet. When you log something, it goes into your Health store under the standard types, which means it is still there if you stop using slotho tomorrow:

  • Nutrition — dietary energy, carbohydrates, protein, total fat, sugar, salt, fibre, caffeine, water and alcoholic drinks, and the electrolytes a product declares (potassium, magnesium, calcium and chloride)
  • Body — weight
  • Symptoms — the digestive symptoms Health provides, which most food apps ignore, and ten more: headache, fatigue, dizziness, acne, body aches, a racing heartbeat, night sweats, sleep changes, vomiting and appetite changes
  • Mind — mood (State of Mind, iOS 18 and later) and mindful minutes from Breathe and Meditate
  • Workouts — the workout itself and its route, active and resting energy, heart rate, physical effort, effort score, and distance for walking, running, cycling, swimming, wheelchair and downhill snow sports

What slotho reads rather than writes

Worth being exact about, because it is the difference between an app that owns your data and one that borrows it. slotho reads your sleep, step count, activity rings, resting heart rate, heart-rate variability, VO₂ max, time in daylight, height, date of birth and biological sex, and any workout recorded by another app — including Apple’s own.

It does not write your sleep. Your watch or whatever sleep app you use records that, and slotho reads it to show you how last night lines up with what you ate and when. The same goes for your step count and your activity rings.

Can you track calories on an Apple Watch?

Two different numbers get called “calories”, and only one of them is measured.

Calories burned are estimated by the watch from your heart rate, movement and personal details. Calories eaten are not measured by any watch, by anyone — they come from a food database and the portion you told it about. No wrist sensor can see your lunch.

So how accurate is it?

Burn estimates are a model, not a measurement, and they are far better at showing you a trend across a fortnight than a true number for one afternoon. Intake numbers inherit whatever the database says and whatever portion you estimated, which is usually the larger error of the two.

Both are useful for exactly the same reason: consistency. The same method applied every day gives you a comparison you can trust, even when neither number is absolutely right.

If you are choosing a food app

One question separates them: does it write to Apple Health, or only read from it? Plenty of trackers read your activity to look integrated and keep the food you enter in their own account, where it is stuck. If an app writes to Health, your log belongs to you and survives the app.

slotho writes. It is free on the App Store, for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, with 1 month of PRO included.

slotho supports general wellness and education. It is not a medical device and does not provide medical advice. Talk to a qualified professional before making changes to your diet, fasting or exercise.
